What to expect

When your child comes to the office for his/her testing appointments, we want to work together to make sure that s/he is able to engage and give his/her best performance. It is important for children to get a good night’s sleep and to be well-rested before testing. Please avoid scheduling testing during busy family times, such as when relatives are visiting, the morning after an event or party (e.g., the morning after the SuperBowl if your child will stay up late), right after a sleepover, etc. It is important that your child eats breakfast before a morning testing session, or has eaten lunch if testing in the afternoon.

Please plan to arrive 5–10 minutes before your scheduled testing appointment, to provide your child time to settle in before testing starts. During testing, we will take occasional breaks from work. For some breaks, we will play games within the office space. At other times, children may go to the waiting area to visit the caregiver who accompanied him/her to the appointment. Please feel free to have your child bring a water bottle and small snack.

Parents are welcome to sit in the waiting area while their child is testing. Some smaller children need a caregiver to help them transition to the office and that is completely fine! The caregiver is welcome to stay for a few minutes and then transition to the waiting room. For some of our youngest friends (under age 3), in rare occasions, parents may be required to sit through the session.

Children should always be praised for their effort and hard work during the assessment process! The assessments are not always easy, and all children deserve to be recognized for their perseverance and cooperation. Some parents may offer their child a “reward” at the end of testing. The best reward for your child is time with a loved one and your unconditional support.
